San Jose, CA to Panama Motorcycle Trip

Here are photos from our trip through Guatemala

Day 22

At our hotel near Flores, Guatemala.  Lago Petén Itzá is in the background.

One of the Mayan "pyramids" at Tikal.  David is standing at the foot of the stairs.

Mark with the top of largest temple at Tikal, Templo IV, in the background.

The view from the top of Templo IV.  (Real Star Wars fans may recognize the view from the end
of Episode IV.)

Day 23

Heading off into the jungle on our day's ride to Lago Izabal.

A hot water waterfall near the lake.  The water was too hot to stand under for long.

Getting ready to take the plunge.

Our hotel on the shores of Lago Izabal.  It was a good thing we got our hot water at the falls, as
hot running water appears to be rare in Guatemala.

Day 24

It poured rain all night, and much of the day.  Right after this we discovered that our next 80 miles
of road was unpaved.

A good stretch of road.  Much of it was mud or wet clay, and mountainous; difficult to drive a motorcycle on.

A river crossing, with the rain-swollen brown river below.

Our view (looking forward) of a traffic jam in a small town on this road.

Day 25

Our very nice hotel in Salamá.  It still didn't have hot water, and we were growing tired of cold showers.

Mark went to visit his friend Margarito in his mountain village.  He was the first foreigner
ever to visit the village.

The villagers make and sell firecrackers to earn extra money.

Meanwhile, David got his bike a very well-deserved and badly needed washing by two nice young
men who wanted to know everything about the motorcycle.

A dinner of hand-made papusas on the street in Chiquimula, just across the border from Copán in Honduras.
